Hairhood: the Strands that Connect Us
Hairhood: the Strands that Connect Us is a collection of ceramic sculptures that explore the ways in which hair and hairstyling connect black women, femmes, and girls. Through form, structure, and texture, these sculptures aim to make visible the figurative and literal bonds between Black women and femmes. Braids, twists, locs, bantu knots, and cornrows appear in the pieces as structural supports physically linking the femme figures to each other to investigate themes of intimacy, care, and closeness. Through an afro-futurist aesthetic and structurally intricate forms, these works play with the limits of what Black hair can do visually and culturally.
